Lucie Rie's work, consisting mainly of hand-turned vases and bowls, is notable for its modernist forms and her use of bright colours. She studied ceramics at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1937 she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition and the following year Rie moved to London to escape the Nazis in Austria.
